It is said that for every battle, there is a winner and a loser. The winner gets all the glory while the loser lives in obscurity. But what if one of these battles never happened? What if both the winners and losers agreed to forego their victory in order for a greater good? 300 Spartans tells an intriguing tale about this real-life event which happened during the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. It also stars a promising young actor named Devon Bostick. Scored with suspenseful music, quick editing, and artfully choreographed fight sequences, 300 Spartans was directed by Zack Snyder from his own original screenplay to showcase his ability as a director rather than being solely responsible for writing it from scratch. In this war epic, the film begins with a young Athenian girl named Phaedra (Anna Hutchinson) who is trapped in her safety zone while her father fights for their safety during the Battle of Thermopylae. She prays for help to Athene, the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare. Help comes in the form of King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) along with his 300 Spartans. These soldiers fought against three thousand Persian soldiers sent by Xerxes I (Rodrigo Santoro). As they fight off the Persians while defending their homeland, King Leonidas’ wife Gorgo (Lena Headey) tells him that he must return to Sparta because there was an attack on their land. After the death of her son, Gorgo becomes paranoid about their safety, thinking that if they are forced to leave Sparta, the Persians will attack Sparta. She decides to keep Leonidas away from his men until they are no longer needed. But once he discovers this news, Leonidas leads his army on a race against time to reach the city before another attack can take place. Queen Gorgo is not completely wrong about what she is feeling for she felt something sinister during the battle with the Persians. A Spartan soldier named Ephialtes (Francois Bruneau) shouts out at her for she believed it was impossible for Leonidas to die so freely without doing anything wrong. Ephialtes was a slave-born soldier from Thessaly who was desperate to fight for his people. He told the Persians about the one weak point of their enemy, an unstable terrain where they can be easily surrounded. In return for his information, Ephialtes wanted to be made a free man and have the right to marry a Greek woman. On his promise, he was granted all these privileges by Xerxes and for this reason, he helped the Persians win a battle that should have been lost by them had King Leonidas not noticed that something was wrong. Ephialtes has been sentenced to death by King Leonidas as well as those who were found guilty of helping him achieve his goal. But King Leonidas was ashamed at himself for his failure to protect his people and he led them to do everything that they could in order to redeem themselves for their mistakes. Unfortunately, during the battle with the Persians, King Leonidas and all 300 Spartans were killed. 300 Spartans is a story about teamwork and how it can change people’s lives forever.
